GSi Convergence Framework (GCF) Services

Internet Access tailored to you

Available to government and public-service organisations in the UK, GCF Services is a reliable, highly secure platform offering a full range of IT services.  This enables data classed as “official” and “official sensitive” to be shared across the UK public sector, regardless of an individual organisation’s location. The service is accessed via PSN – the government’s high-performance Public Services Network.

Please note that the GCF Service is only open to existing customers and renewed contracts will end on the 30th September 2020.

Background

The GCF Service offers a secure platform aimed at public-sector organisations, which offers an interoperable suite of services: DNS, TNS, email-relay and peer-to-peer services, along with optional extras, such as email filtering and secure internet proxy connections.

GCF Services’ DNS solution uses dual, geographically separate data centres to ensure a robust service, while its DNS proxy capability helps with security. You can also establish a centrally held list of blocked sites, such as those known to distribute malware.

Sensitive data

The GCF Services platform was designed specially to handle data classed as “official” and “official sensitive”.

How it works

By default, the GCF Service’s TNS (network time service) provides a central trusted time directly from the UK’s national radio clock signal and GPS, but this can be switched to another time service if required.

The email relay component handles the secure transmission of email between mail systems within and beyond PSN – including the public Internet. It works with standard SMTP and TLS protocols and automatically tries to resend bounced emails. There is also an email filtering option available as an add-on service. This provides protection from viruses, spam and malware along with encryption and data protection options that enable you to control if and how sensitive information is transmitted by email.

Another standard component of GCF Services is peer-to-peer connections between PSN networks and other approved public sector networks and services. This offers customers a simple way to share data and applications. The peer-to-peer service is hosted in UK data centres and already provides connections between individuals using PSN’s Protected and Assured setups and the Police National Network.

Finally, another add-on, secure internet proxy connections, enables individuals working within the PSN to access the web, while preserving their anonymity while outside the secure network.

All individuals working to provide the email relay, peer-to-peer and secure internet proxy connectivity services have all undergone UK Government Security Checks (SC).
